Permits & Inspections

Permits and inspections are required by the City of Alvin's Code of Ordinances to ensure safe construction with sound materials.

• New commercial and home construction requires two sets of engineer sealed drawings, and a survey and plot plan.
• Permits and Inspections are required for new construction, remodeling, and repairs. Residential owners wishing to remodel or repair their homes must provide proof of homestead exemption prior to the purchase of any permits.
• Applicants wishing to place or repair homes located within manufactured home parks must hire a mechanical service company for any type of hook-ups or repairs.
• Once construction has begun, inspections are necessary throughout the construction process to assure compliance with safety standards and City regulation.

Adopted Code References are the 2018 ICC codes (IRC), 2017 NEC, 2018 IECC, 2018 IFC, 2015 Med Gas NFPA 99, 140 mph winds per code table.

Online Permitting

Through the MyGov portal you can register as a Contractor or Homeowner which will allow you to submit permit applications, follow review comments, print your permit after approval, schedule inspections, and view inspection results.

Customers will need to register online before being able to apply for permits through the portal. Navigate to our MyGov.us page to start the registration process.**

** EXISTING CUSTOMERS -We have recently upgraded our MyGov so you will be asked to upgrade your account as well. When prompted, do not create a new account, simply click login and proceed with your previous login information to upgrade your account.

Inspection Requests

All inspection requests will require a 24-hour notice unless an emergency condition exists. Please request inspections online at MyGov.us or call 281-388-4271. The name of your company, the project address, type of inspection and a phone number will be required.

To expedite inspection requests our automated voice mail is available 24 hours a day. For emergency inspections between the hours of 6 pm to 7 am and all day on Saturday and Sunday, please call the City of Alvin Police department at 281-388-4370. Driveways

Any construction or replacement of a driveway or driveway culvert requires a permit. Residential driveways/culverts can be a maximum of 24' wide and a minimum of 12' wide. Commercial driveways may not exceed 35' in width. Enclosing of ditches across the front of property is not permitted. If your property front is located on a state highway, a permit is also required from the Texas Department of Transportation. Their number is 979-864-8500. Garage Sales

A permit is not required to hold a garage sale. Signs should be limited to the private property hosting the garage sale. Signs are not permitted in public right-of-way or property.
